The accused, a labourer hired to fix a tent, had whisked away the girl to a secluded place and raped her.

The local police refused to file an FIR for 15 days. Station House Officer Kumar also tried to force survivor's father to drop the charges.

He raped the four-and-half-year-old girl while on bail, facing molestation charges, and was arrested.

According to the police, the girl’s parents had approached Lingappa to resolve the issue, when the girl was adamant on marrying her cousin.

Nearly 400 people had filed lawsuits against the Church in courts across New York by the afternoon, according to state court records.
