According to BJP sources, the party decided to drop Mr Somaiya even after Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray gave his consent to his nomination.

The Sena chief claimed that the party would get more votes (seats) in the election in comparison with the previous election.

A former Congress city unit chief, he served as a Member of the Legislative Council (MLC) between 2008 and 2014.

Mr Vikhe-Patil said that the infighting and one-upmanship in the party has caused its downfall.
