Top seeds Sania Mirza and Martina Hingis were tested by Russia’s Daria Kasatkina and Alexandra Panova before getting through to the second round of the women doubles event in the French Open, here on Wednesday.

Sania and Martina, the reigning Wimbledon, US Open and Australian Open champions, prevailed 7-6 (4), 6-2 in the opening round of the clay court Major, which they need to win to complete their non-calendar Slam.

Sania and Martina lost their serve thrice in the match as they battled 12 breakpoints in the contest. After trading a few breaks, the teams were level 5-5 in the opening set. The top seeds had a set point in the 12th game but their rivals stretched it to the tie breaker, which was a tight affair but Sania and Martina prevailed.

The world no. 1 team broke Kasatkina-Panova in the first game of the second set but only to be broken in the next.
