Sony has confirmed that a heavily requested and rumored feature — the ability to play older PlayStation classic games — is coming soon on the PlayStation 4.

Revealed thanks to the Star Wars PS4 bundle, which includes four older Star Wars games that are playable on PS4, Sony said it is working on bringing over other famous PS2 games via emulation. But I doubt the PS4 will be able to run your PS2 discs. This will most probably be a digital-only service which will let you purchase PS2 games that can run on the PS4, with trophy support and tweaks. This might pave way for PS1 emulation, making the PS4 a great place to play all the PS1 and PS2 classics.

This does not mean that Sony is looking to bring PS3 backwards compatibility to PS4. It is a widely-known fact the PS3 architecture was painful to work with, and it is far too different from the PS4 architecture for backwards compatibility. Not allowing PS3 games through this might also have a financial reason behind it as Sony would also want to promote PlayStation Now — a service which lets you stream a wide variety of PS3 titles.

It is a stark contrast to what Microsoft is offering with its version of backwards compatibility, which allows disc-based Xbox 360 titles on Xbox One. There will be more information on this at PS Experience — on December 5.
