From quite a while now, leaks and rumours have shown off what all would feature in Samsung’s latest flagship device, the Galaxy Note 9. But nothing is quite as sweet as an official announcement and that’s exactly what happened. Samsung took to the stage and finally unveiled the Galaxy Note 9 and on the first view, you may feel that it is a minor update over the Galaxy Note 8, but there are some improvements that make this device stand out from the crowd.

To start off, the Note 9 comes with a 6.4-inch Super AMOLED touchscreen that features an 83.4 per cent screen-to-body ratio. It has a resolution of 1440 x 2960p along with an 18:5:9 aspect ratio. The display used here is HDR10 compliant and it features an Always On Display. For protection, Samsung has used a Corning Gorilla Glass 5 that should protect the handset from multiple accidental drops.

For the US, Latin America and Chinese market, Samsung has used a Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 chipset, while the rest of the world gets Exynos 9810 Octa chipset. The GPU found on the handset is a Mali-G72 MP18 for global markets, while the US, Latin America and China get an Adreno 630 GPU. The Note 9 will go on sale in two configurations, 6GB RAM with 128GB of storage and an 8GB RAM with 512GB of onboard storage. Additionally, it can support a microSD card up to 512GB, so pairing it with the 512GB variant, you can get a total of 1TB of storage.

There had been a ton of rumours that suggested that Samsung would be using an in-display fingerprint scanner but they held no truth. Samsung has added a fingerprint scanner on the rear of the device and placed it under the dual-camera system.

Samsung has used a 12MP dual-aperture f/1.5-2.4 wide and 12MP f/2.4 telephoto cameras on the Note 9, both of which are optically stabilised and the brand has focused its camera improvements on software along with Artificial intelligence. The front-facing camera is 8MP with an aperture of f/1.7.

The Galaxy Note 9 comes with an IP68 certification making it water resistant. The S Pen that comes along with the device features this water-resistant certification as well.

One of the most interesting features of this device is the new S Pen. It is Bluetooth-enabled and the first of its kind from Samsung to come with this feature. It can also act as a remote shutter for the camera and it has a range of 10 metres. It also features a battery power of 30 minutes or 200 clicks and can recharge in just 40 seconds in its slot inside the phone. The S Pen comes with three new inputs, short press, long press and double press.

The handset comes with an impressive 4000mAh battery, this is larger than most of the batteries available on Android smartphones and the largest to be fitted inside a Note. The handset supports fast charging and besides keeping the handset powered on, Samsung has validated and certified it by companies such as UL and Exponent. The handset comes with a brand new water cooling system that Samsung has branded ‘Water Carbon Cooling’ and it is designed to ensure smooth consistent performance during long gaming sessions.

Lastly, the Samsung Galaxy Note 9 features the DeX software which can now be accessed by attaching an external display into the handset by using an HDMI adapter. The handset behaves as normal when DeX is running and it can be used to act as a trackpad or use the virtual keyboard for typing.

The Samsung Galaxy Note 9 comes in Ocean Blue, Midnight Black, Lavender Purple and the new Metallic Copper. The 6GB variant costs USD 999 (about Rs 68,776) and the 8GB version costs USD 1,250 (approximately Rs 86,056).
