Snapchat is teaming up with Jeff Koons for a new augmented reality feature.
Snapchat is planning to release a new augmented reality art feature that will display art from Jeff Koons and others. This new feature will enable art to be pinned to certain locations in augmented reality so that users can see it when they hold up their phones.
The multimedia app plans to release the feature along with Koons’s art around the world — with specific locations in Las Vegas, Sydney, and Paris being highlighted in the promotional images.
That app spawns virtual collectible monsters depending on the user’s location and exclusively in certain cities and geographical regions during special events. Snapchat has a similar feature called geofilters, which lets users design custom filters locked to a certain location.
Koons, the figurehead artist for the launch, is well-known for his huge balloon animal sculptures and is also a Snapchat fan. Snapchat wrote, “Discover Koons’s innovative digital installations scattered across the world to experience them for yourself, and learn a little more about them.” The digital artwork from Koons will be available in New York, Chicago, Washington D.C., Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Toronto, Sydney, London, Paris, and Rio de Janeiro. Snapchat will solicit sign-ups from artists who want their art added to the platform.
