Mamta Prabhu wins title on comeback

Mamta Prabhu, ex-international, coming out of forced retirement after almost five years, won her second title of the season, beating title favourite Ashlesha Trehan 4-2  in the women’s singles  final of the Mumbai Suburban  District  Table Tennis Championships held at Khar Gymkhana here.  Mamta had won the JVPGC-All Mumbai Ranking title last month.

Mamta, who had represented the country in the Asian Games, Commonwealth Games and many other international tournaments for number of years, used her experience  to the hilt to subdue Ashlesha  in a tensely fought tie. The Dena Bank player eventually won by a 11-9, 13-15, 13-11, 11-8, 9-11, 11-3 scoreline.

For unseeded collegian Viren Patel, it was quite a memorable day as he knocked out second seeded Bhavitvya Shah 7-11,11-7, 11-8, 5-11, 4-11, 7-11, 11-7, 11-5 to clinch the men’s singles title.

Sharing the final day’s honours were Srushti Haleangadi and Reagan Albuquerque, as they ended with a double each. Both won their respective youth and junior singles finals with commanding displays.
