Chikkamagaluru: In a gruesome incident, a mother has been arrested for allegedly burning her 23-day-old baby alive in an oven at her house in Chikkamagaluru district of Karnataka yesterday.

Sangeeta, a resident of Doddahatti village in Kadur taluk, delivered a baby girl on March 2 at the Kadur Government Hospital.

Yesterday, Sangeeta raised alarm that her baby was missing and that a stray dog might have taken her away. Neighbours searched for the baby but couldn't trace her. A few hours later, the woman’s husband Ameeth, sensing that a foul smell was emanating inside the house, discovered the charred body of the baby in the oven.

The Kadur police took Sangeeta into custody and she has remanded in judicial custody.

Police suspect that Sangeeta committed the murder because the baby was a girl. An investigation is being carried out.
