Pakistan: The Eye of a Coming Storm?
By OUR CORRESPONDENT
Kolkata, Feb. 28: A team of the city detective department (DD) on Wednesday raided B.M. Birla Heart Research Centre acting on a complaint lodged by the relatives of director Anjan Chowdhury who died at the hospital on February 21. It also seized all documents related to the treatment of Chowdhury. The case which had been lodged at Alipore police station was later forwarded to the DD.
Meanwhile, Chowdhury’s son-in-law Ashok Nath Mukherjee met the city DD chief Gyanwant Singh at the Kolkata police headquarters at Lalbazar on Wednesday. "We had been asked to clarify the nature of allegations we wanted to charge the hospital authorities with. So we have submitted a statement," said Mr Mukherjee. DD sources revealed that Chowdhury’s relatives were called in to verify the documents that had been seized from the hospital.
Since the post-mortem on Chowdhury’s body was conducted by a medical board, the reports, including those of the viscera test and other pathological tests, would be out only by the next 15-20 days, added sources.
DD officials have also assured that the six accused, including hospital medical superintendent Anindya Chatterjee, would be interrogated. Despite repeated attempts, the hospital authorities were not available for comment. However, medical negligence, if any, cannot be found in the initial stages of enquiry.
