Russian hammer thrower Sergei Litvinov is all set to miss the Rio Olympics after the Court of Arbitration for Sport upheld the IAAF’s decision to ban the country’s athletes for being part of state-sponsored doping. Missing an Olympics for reasons other than qualification isn’t new to Litvinov’s family. Litvinov’s father, Sergei (Sr), was unable to take part at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics as the USSR stayed away from the event as retaliation for USA’s boycott of the 1980 Moscow Games. Sergei (Sr), who coaches his son now, perserved to win the hammer throw gold at the 1988 Olympics.
