A man had to pay a heavy price for insulting his wife indiscreetly in front of their neighbours in Wada, Palghar district. Early in the dawn on Sunday, when Devram Ghatal (33) was fast asleep, his wife, Pinki (30) poured boiling hot water on him as an act of vengeance and subsequently absconded from the scene.

On Saturday night, an infuriated Ghatal gave his wife a hiding because instead of cooking food, she spent time gossiping in her neighbourhood.

The Wada police have registered a case of attempt to murder against her and is in search for the accused. The man who has suffered 65 per cent burns, is admitted in a Palghar government hospital for treatment.

Ghatal, a farmer and resident of Hamrapur in Wada returned from Palghar where he had gone for an agro deal. On his return when he couldn’t find his wife around, he kept searching for her in the neighbourhood.

Eventually he spotted her busy gossiping with the ladies of the neighbourhood, said PI Sanjay Hazare of Wada police station. In front of the other women, Ghatal had a showdown with Pinki and went to sleep without having any food.

Meanwhile Pinki, seething for being scorned in public, went to the kitchen and boiled a utensil full of water and then using steel tongs poured it all over his body, when he was sound asleep, said PI Hazare. While Ghatal screamed in pain, Pinki absconded the scene.

Eventually, locals rushed him to the Wada government hospital from where he was shifted to the Palghar Rural Hospital on Monday.

The Wada police has registered case under Section 307 (attempt to murder), and 504 (intentional insult) against Pinki, said the official.

The patient may be shifted to the J J Hospital for the burn injuries, as his condition is critical, said the police.
