Frequent squabbles led to a brother killing his own sister at Navy Nagar, Colaba, on Tuesday. The accused Shyam Naidu fled the scene after attacking his sister, Rajshree Mhatre, with a kitchen knife. The siblings’ mother, Sarla Naidu, who tried to intervene to save her daughter, was injured in the bargain and is now undergoing treatment at G.T. Hospital.

An official from the Colaba police said that Shyam was unemployed and was living with his widowed mother Sarla and sister Rajshree in the house owned by his father who died three to four years ago. Rajshree was married but had returned to her maternal home after having a fight with her husband soon after her father’s death.

“Neighbours told us that Shyam was unhappy with Rajshree’s presence in the house. Rajshree meanwhile taunted Shyam about being unemployed. Tuesday afternoon, Shyam came home in an inebriated state and started arguing with Rajshree An infuriated Shyam then attacked her with a knife,” said the official.
