In its bid to register new voters in the state for the upcoming municipal and legislative council elections, the state election commission (SEC) has extended its deadline for the preparation of the final voters’ list. Instead of publishing this list by December 31, the SEC will now release it on January 5 next year, which, in turn, will delay the elections.

The SEC’s drive to enrol new voters is in accordance with Supreme Court directions given in January this year for ‘de novo’ — or fresh registration — of voters for seats reserved for graduates and teachers in the legislative council. Elections are scheduled in Aurangabad, Nagpur and Konkan for teachers’ constituencies, and for graduates’ constituencies in Nashik and Amravati.

The term of the MLCs representing these constituencies will get over on December 5. According to the SEC’s guidelines, the election should be held before the term ends. This time, though, the polls will be held in February or March next year.

An SEC official said, “On January 12 , the SC ordered for ‘de novo’ of voters for these constituencies. The Election Commission had then fixed December 31 as the date for publication of the new voters’ list for the five graduates’ and teachers’ constituencies.”
