A jailer from Nashik has recently been suspended not only because he sanctioned convict Sajjad Mogul’s parole, but also for sanctioning the parole and furlough of a few other prisoners without checking proper details. Some other accused too have jumped the furlough and parole previously in his tenure.

This comes in nearly three months after Mogul, the security guard arrested for the murder of city-based lawyer Pallavi Puryakastha jumped parole and did not return to Nashik Central Jail.

Eknath Dawale, divisional commissioner, Nashik has claimed that the jailer J.S. Naik has the quasi judicial powers that means that after a convict applies for parole, it is the job of the jail authorities to decide whether it needs to be processed and sent for approval, or not.

“Jail authority is mainly responsible for granting parole and therefore we decided to take action against the jailer. Mr Naik the then jail superintendent who granted the parole does not have a good background in the service.

He had preciously granted parole and furlough to a few accused who too had jumped the parole. So we decided to suspend him,” said principal secretary home Vijay Satbir Singh.

Mogul had requested to be permitted to go home to Uri in Baramulla district of Kashmir to visit his ailing mother.

The parole was granted on February 28 and was to end on March 28. He applied for an extension of his parole on March 12, which was rejected, after which he jumped the parole.
