The department of legal metrology (LMO) has opened weighing counters and launched 24-hour control rooms to help prevent consumers from being exploited during the festive season.

The department of legal metrology (LMO) has opened weighing counters and launched 24-hour control rooms to help prevent consumers from being exploited during the festive season. It also raided Monginis Foods Pvt Ltd in Andheri (west) and checked the net content of various Monginis products. The LMO conducted raids on shops across the state to curb the menace of overcharging. A notice was recently served to Monginis — a pastry and bakery chain based in Mumbai — after it was found that packets of Monginis Shrewsbury biscuits, a widely-consumed product, had less biscuits contained in them than what was advertised on the packets. The company, which has outlets in various cities in India and abroad, has 15 days to reply.

LMO controller Amitabh Gupta said, “One of Monginis’ products, named Monginis Shrewsbury biscuits — which is supposed to have a net weight 200 g — was examined and the average net weight of 32 such packages was found to be 197.05g. This means the weight was short by nearly 3 g, which is beyond the permissible limit.”

Mr Gupta added: “This violates the Legal Metrology Act 2009 and Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules, 2011. An offence was registered against Monginis Foods Pvt Ltd for violating norms of the metrology Act.”

Consumers can make use of the newly-launched help desks to ensure that the products they buy from various markets are of the correct weight and measure. They can also submit complaints online at dclmms@yahoo.in and on the WhatsApp number, 986961666.

The help desks and control rooms at the district headquarters will function regularly, Mr Gupta said in a release. All calls to Monginis officials went unanswered.
