The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) will prepare a social impact assessment report for identifying issues related to rehabilitation and project affected people (PAP) for the construction of four metro corridors in the city, namely Metro-2A, Metro-2B, Metro-4 and Metro 7.

To carry out the detailed cadastral and socio-economic survey, the MMRDA will appoint consultants or NGOs. “Appointed parties will prepare a social impact assessment report that will also include the policy framework and resettlement implementation plans,” said an MMRDA official.

The MMRDA plans to start work after monsoons on both the Metro-2A and Metro-7 for which the contractors have already been short-listed. In case of Metro-7, the on-ground soil testing has already begun. For the Metro-2B and Metro-4, the project is yet to go through tendering procedure and the same is to be completed by the year-end.

For the construction of Colaba-Bandra-Seepz Metro-3 corridor, about 1,780 hutments and 709 families were affected. Of which 617 families are currently residing in 28 buildings that are to be affected by the construction of Girgaon and Kalbadevi stations.

However, the rehabilitation has become an impediment, as Shiv Sena and BJP are at loggerheads where the Sena claims it will displace Maharashtrians.

“The construction of Metro-2A/B, Metro-4 and Metro-7, we do not think will be a task as there would be hardly around 400 affected occupants for all the three lines. However, the consultants role will be to guide us on the same as there could be ups and downs in the number of PAP’s with the change in alignment, if any,” added the official.
