A Jet Airways aircraft arriving from Delhi suffered a tyre burst on landing at Mumbai airport on Thursday at 10 pm.

A Jet Airways aircraft arriving from Delhi suffered a tyre burst on landing at Mumbai airport on Thursday at 10 pm. The incident forced the authorities to shut down the main runway for at least 12 hours and later, on Friday morning, again owing to the drizzles and heavy wind, the primary runway was shut for some time and operations were shifted to the secondary runway. Till late on Friday evening, landings and takes off from the city airport were reported to be half an hour late and from Thursday night onwards, 10 flights supposed to land at the city airport had to be diverted to other cities.

Earlier, the Jet Airways aircraft 9W 354 with 127 passengers on board landed at the main runway and near taxiway N9 owing to the hydraulic failure, the engine of the aircraft touched the ground (gear collapsed) and got damaged. Immediately after this, passengers and crew were disembarked safely and taken to the terminal building. Since then, the main runway was kept shut for maintenance work of the aircraft. Later, on Friday morning, engineers of the airways came up with a crane and the aircraft was taken to the hangar for repair. The incident occurred during peak hours for international operations, and after 10 pm four aircraft were diverted to other cities. The problem aggravated Friday as around 10 am, the drizzles started which again forced the airport operator to close the runway for some time.

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) is probing the incident of landing gear collapse of the Jet Airways’ Boeing 737 aircraft upon touch down at Mumbai airport. DGCA suspects that this incident could be the result of mechanical failure. “The airline has kept the Directorate General of Civil Aviation informed about the event and is extending all co-operation,” said the official spokesperson for Jet Airways.
