In yet another act of heroism, the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) saved a flooding vessel near offshore Mumbai. ICG officials said that the vessel was evacuated safely and all of its crew was safe as only the forward side of the vessel had touched bottom. Commenting on the reason, a senior coast guard official said that the vessel was not sufficiently equipped with pump and water logging-related instruments. Earlier on July 12, ICG had found a vessel sailing near the Mumbai coast which locals found suspicious.

ICG officials informed that the informed Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MMRC), Mumbai, received a help call from the Master of MV Kumar (Mini Bulk Carrier) Capt. Ashok Corrol, who informed about flooding onboard the vessel. At the time of the incident, the vessel was grounded off Revdanda near the city at a distance of approx 1.5 nautical miles. MRCC was told that the forward portion of the ship had touched the ground. MV Kumar had departed from Mumbai at 12 am of July 13 and arrived in Revdanda after a few hours only to be anchored there due to the problem.

“We conducted an investigation in the matter and the master informed us that only the forward part of the vessel had touched bottom. The vessel MV Kumar wasn’t equipped with sufficient damage control equipment so the probability of it capsizing in rough sea rose and we immediately started rescue operations,” said a ICG official.

In the early hours of Friday, Coast Guard Helicopter was launched from Mumbai and a team of ICG members reached Revdanda Port for arranging pumps for de-flooding. Following this, the officials approached the owner of the vessel’s company for arranging one tug with divers and submersible pumps from Mumbai for providing necessary salvage assistance. The deflooding operation took place with two pumps, informed ICG officials. By late Friday, the vessel and its crew should reach Mumbai.
