Elderly couple committed suicide in Borivali area on Thursday allegedly due to financial trouble.

Elderly couple committed suicide in Borivali area on Thursday allegedly due to financial trouble. The deceased have been identified as Ashok H Shah (58) and his wife Ila Shah (56), residents of Saidham building in Borivali west. The couple was staying in the house with their son Mihir, his wife and one son. Mihir and his wife are both paediatricians.

Gunaji Sawant, senior police inspector from Borivali, said, “Preliminary investigation has revealed that the couple was disturbed over money issues and in the suicide note which was written by Ila and has the signatures of both Ila and Ashok mentions it too.” The suicide note was written in Gujarati, which held no one responsible for the suicide. Sources said Shah has a steel plant in Bhayandar area which had run into problems.

According to police sources, the preliminary investigation has revealed that Mihir, before going to work on Thursday, had overheard his parents discussing money problems and he had consoled them. However when he returned home, he found it locked, and entered the house using another set of keys. He found his parents had hanged themselves using a Duppatta. The couple was rushed to Shatabdi and the police was informed, who registered a accidental death report. The couple was declared brought dead at the hospital. The suicide note was kept under the telephone.

Sudhakar Pujari, ACP of the area, said, “The elderly couple committed suicide in their house when they were alone on Thursday evening and their body was recovered when their son, a doctor by profession reached house around 10.45 pm on Thursday.”
