A 30-foot-long dead whale was washed ashore at Juhu beach in Mumbai on Friday morning. Locals, who spotted the dead mammal, informed the police and the forest department.

According to eyewitness and the forest department, the whale had died three-four days ago and washed ashore on Friday. Marine biologists in India will conduct a post-mortem on the whale. As per forest officials, the weight of the whale was around 20 tonnes.

Assistant conservator of Forest (Mangroves Protection Cell) Makrand Ghodke said that there was no injury in the body and they will try to preserve the skeleton. “The whale might have been suffering from some illness,” he said.

Animesh Limaye, an expert from Reefwatch India, said, “The body has been taken for a post-mortem. But in such cases, it becomes difficult to conduct a post-mortem as due to body weight and other issues, the internal organs get damaged. Then the chances of getting an accurate result becomes 50 per cent.”
