The police claims to have busted a gang of robbers who stole parked trucks on highways and in the city, after two persons were arrested by Gujarat police and five by Trombay police on Saturday. Navi Mumbai police said it was a national racket in which more people were involved, and they were on the lookout for them.

Acting on a tip-off from Wapi, Balsad, Gujarat police arrested two accused on Saturday identified as Mohammad Sharif Shaikh alias Baba (43) and his partner, Ranjit Ramprakash Soni (27).

PSI Nitesh Trivedi from Surat crime branch, said, “We had received information about these two accused coming to Balsad to sell the stolen truck. We laid a trap and our team arrested them from the place. At the time of interrogation, they told us that they had robbed the truck from APMC market, Navi Mumbai, so we transferred the case to Navi Mumbai police.”

Meanwhile, APMC police said that they came to know during interrogation that the accused had stolen over 29 trucks from all over Maharashtra, mainly from Navi Mumbai and Mumbai. The accused used to steal Tata company trucks because they said it was easy to make duplicate keys of those trucks. A key maker too is involved in the racket. These people used to rob trucks by making duplicate keys and sometimes, they even engaged the services of cleaners to achieve their purpose. They used to then get duplicate keys made by taking impressions on soap bars.

In the beginning of April, Trombay police arrested five accused. At the time, these robbers had made away with a truck worth Rs 13 lakh and were on their way to Gujarat to sell it. The arrested accused, all Govandi residents, have been identified as Javed Munshi Sayyed (25), Mohammad Shamim Muslim Choudhari (23), Nasiruddin Hyder Ali Sheikh (26), Mohammad Tafsir Toufik Khan (25) and Krishna Ramesh Gupta (20).
