As a last chance, the special MCOCA court on Monday granted the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) time till August 5, to file a chargesheet against deported gangster Rajendra Sadahiv Nikalje alias Chhota Rajan in the murder case of senior journalist J Dey.

CBI counsel Bharat Badami on Monday told the special judge Sameer Adkar that after the arrest of Rajan, the CBI has gathered huge evidence in the case and even the role of a new accused has emerged in the murder. The CBI was expected to file a supplementary chargesheet against Rajan in the court on Monday. However when the CBI sought further time, the judge asked for the reason behind the delay. Mr Badami said the role of a new accused has came to light and as per prescribed criminal procedure, the CBI needs a fresh sanction to prosecute Rajan.

He also said that the day he gets the sanction, the agency would file the chargesheet and that the CBI is working on it and that it is reflected in the case diary. He sought 10 days’ time to file the chargesheet. According to Mr Badami, he did not want to file a chargesheet in a hasty manner, leaving scope for questions later.

At this, the judge adjourned the matter till August 5. The judge, however, noted in his order that this time is granted as a “last chance” and if for some unforeseen reason a supplementary chargesheet is not filed, the charges against Rajan would be framed based on the material taken on record.
