CBI case on former Army vice-chief

The Central Bureau of Investigation on Tuesday raided the home of former vice-chief of the Army, Lieutenant General Noble Thamburaj, and registered a case against him and former defence estate officer S.R. Nayyar for criminal conspiracy, cheating and criminal misconduct. They had allegedly handed over 0.96 acres of land in Pune to Kalpataru Builders.

“A case has been registered on Tuesday against Lt. Gen. Thamburaj, Mr Nayyar and others. The complaint was forwarded by the defence ministry to the CBI for investigation,” the CBI said.
A team of CBI sleuths on Tuesday raided Lt. Gen. Thamburaj’s residence in Fatima Nagar and Mr Nayyar’s home in Kondhwa’s Lulla Nagar and searched their premises, and recovered “incriminating documents”. These have been seized and are under scrutiny.
Lt. Gen. Thamburaj and Mr Nayyar allegedly showed favour to Kalpataru Builders for a property on Lothian Road in Pune Cantonment by settling the matter out of court, despite a verdict favouring the Army. This is a misconduct on the part of public servants, and which caused a loss of `46 crore to the Army. The duo even ignored existing rules, policies and terms of lease, set by the ministry of defence, in order to favour the developer. The CBI is also investigating the role of a lawyer, who acted as a middleman.

As a self-confessed hardliner, I must admit that being a part of the team engaged in Indo-Pak Track 2 dialogue has been very interesting.
