The results of the CA (finals) and Common Proficiency Test (CPT) exams conducted by Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) declared on Sunday saw a decline in the pass percentage over the previous year. This year around 42,469 students appeared for the CA final exams in which James Britto from Chennai was the all-India topper with 74.38 per cent. The overall pass percentage was 5.75 as opposed to last years 8.23 per cent.

According to statistics of both the exams released by the ICAI, out of the 42,469 who appeared for both group I and II papers only 2,440 were successful, bringing the pass percentage to 5.75 per cent. However the results of students who appeared for the groups individually were much better, with group I seeing 77,442 students appearing of which 9,764 were successful, giving a passing percentage of 12.61. Group II saw the pass percentage dip as out of the 75,774 students who appeared for the paper only 9,084 were successful, giving an overall pass percentage of 11.99.

The CPT paper, which is an entrance-level exam, saw 99,077 students which included 60,271 male and 38,806 female students take the exam. In all 34,129 students have become eligible to pursue CA studies. The exam was held at 382 centers in the country and saw a pass percentage of 34.45 per cent.

While Mumbai has one of the largest number of students pursuing CA studies in the country, none of the students appearing for the CA (finals) could find a place in the top three spots. James Britto of Chennai was the all India topper followed by Nagolu Mohan Kumar from Tirupati securing second spot with 71.50 per cent and Avinash Sancheti from Kolkata taking the third spot with 70.75 per cent.
