The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has directed a probe into the alleged incident of women staff members dancing in the Diwaliben Mehta Hospital in Chembur and denying services to patients.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has directed a probe into the alleged incident of women staff members dancing in the Diwaliben Mehta Hospital in Chembur and denying services to patients.

The BMC health department has received an anonymous complaint of women staff members of the hospital dancing and having a merry time in the OPD on March 2 as they celebrated a ‘Haldikunku’ ceremony by playing loud music. It has also been alleged that around 10 to 15 staffers, including doctors, nurses and class IV workers of hospital turned away patients while celebrating the festival. The complaint also says that only around 300 patients were examined that day as compared to 800 on usual days.

Medical Superintendent and Supervisor of Diwaliben Mehta Hospital, Dr Pradeep Jadhav said, “Following a complaint filed with us, we have set up a committee to investigate the incident and the report would be submitted in a day or two.” However, he claimed that as per initial findings, it does not look as if any rules were broken.

A senior official of the health department, requesting anonymity, said, “The allegation levelled against the staff is baseless. Not a single patient has come forward to substantiate the charges.” “The festival was celebrated in several hospitals of the city. All the patients were duly attended to as it was organised during post-duty hours. Moreover, it was a ceremony only for women, and all male staffers including doctors were at work,” he said.

The issue was also raised in the civic standing committee.
