The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is now one step closer to an in-house solution for dealing with solid wet waste generated within its 24 wards.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is now one step closer to an in-house solution for dealing with solid wet waste generated within its 24 wards. With the civic body having floated tenders for the project earlier this month, all 24 wards will get their first waste-processing units within their compounds by the end of this year.

The project is estimated to cost BMC nearly Rs 1 crore and will see setting up of 26 bio-digester units within the city. The units will have the capacity to process 25 to 50 kilogram of waste, depending on the space available within the ward office. A civic official from the solid waste management department said, “We want to set an example of dealing with solid wet waste at the source. All ward offices have canteens and generate basic waste every day. So, we are implementing this project in our offices on a pilot basis”.
