A city court on Friday remanded Ahmed Mohammad Ali Qureshi (20) — accused of assaulting traffic policeman Vilas Shinde, which led to his death — to police custody till September 6.

Advocate Rampratap Singh, while representing Qureshi in the metropolitan court, questioned the need for taking the accused into custody once again when the police had already taken his custody and even interrogated him while in custody. But public prosecutor Vaibhav Bagade argued that charges against Qureshi had changed and were now of a more serious nature, which is why he needed to be interrogated again.

After hearing both sides, Justice A.S. Pandharikar granted Qureshi’s custody to the Khar police. Later, while speaking to The Asian Age, Advocate Singh said, “Only the charges against Qureshi were changed, but the incident was the same, and so his custody was not needed. I thus argued for him not being remanded in police custody again.”

However, a senior officer from Khar police station said that as of now, the police had not received a confessional statement from the accused. So, to make a strong case against him, the police is taking statements of petrol pump workers, pedestrians and other traffic policemen, the officer said. The process of taking statements from doctors at Lilavati Hospital was also underway, he added. The home department, in the meantime, had appointed Advocate Bagade as the special public prosecutor in the case.

Another senior officer attached to Khar police station said that they had arrested Qureshi’s brother, aged 16, in connection with the case.
