Driven by hatred, a 56-year-old woman brutally beat to death her daughter-in-law and her mother with an iron rod after sedating after lacing their food at their residence in Mumbra’s Kausa area on Monday. The woman later went to the Mumbra police station, confessed to her crime and surrendered herself. The police arrested her for murder under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and produced her in the court following which she was sent to police custody for two days.

According to police officials, “The accused, identified as Rashida Vasani, had been living alone for the past few years. Due to her quarrelsome nature, her husband and their two sons had abandoned her. She used to blame and hate both her daughter-in laws for her sons leaving her alone.”

“Around 40 days ago, her elder son’s Makdoom’s wife, Salma, delivered a baby following which her mother, Shamima Shaikh (45), was invited to stay with them and take care of both. That her son preferred his mother-in-law over his mother, fuelled Rashida’s angst against Salma and she went to stay with them in Mumbra without invitation around six days ago. Once there, she began planning Salma and Shamima’s murder,” the police added.

“On Sunday, a fight broke out between Rashida and Makdoom, following which he asked her to leave their home the next day. On Monday, after her son left for office, Rashida, prepared food and laced it with sedatives. After consuming the food, Salma and Shamima became unconscious. Rashida first hit them with an iron rod and then slit their throats and ears. Later, she surrendered to us and we arrested her and produced in the court,” said DCP Abhishek Trimukhe.
