A 30-year-old woman, who was being treated at a nursing home in Govandi after having recently miscarried, died on Saturday as she had allegedly received wrong treatment. The Shivaji Nagar police has registered cases against four doctors, all of whom are absconding. The nursing home was locked after the case was registered.

On Saturday, Naziabano Atique Qureshi was declared dead before she was admitted to Rajawadi Hospital at Ghatkopar where she was shifted from Sajida Nursing Home. Qureshi’s condition became serious after Dr Mustafa, the resident medical officer (RMO) at the nursing home, who was reportedly unqualified, had allegedly administered a wrong injection.

Qureshi suffered a miscarriage on Friday, and — after doctors advised her to have the foetus removed — was admitted to the nursing home. The procedure was carried out the following day, after which her condition began to deteriorate.

Blaming the nursing home’s staff’s negligence for his loss, Qureshi’s husband Atique, said, “Dr Mustafa; the owner of the nursing home, Dr Nasreen Shaikh; Dr Salman Shaikh and gynaecologist Dr Manju Kumari are responsible for her death. They had asked me to take my wife to Rajawadi Hospital by taxi and when I returned to the nursing home, they had all fled. This was suspicious, and I informed the police about them.”

Speaking about the case, police inspector Hussain Jatkar of the Shivaji Nagar police station said, “On Atique’s complaint, we have registered a first information report under Section 304 (causing death by doing any rash or negligent act not amounting to culpable homicide) and 34 of the Indian Penal Code against Dr Mustafa, Dr Nasreen Shaikh, Dr Salman Shaikh and Dr Kumari. They are absconding after the incident and locked the nursing home. All of Qureshi’s files and case papers are inside the nursing home. We will only come to know which injection was given to her after going through these papers.”

Meanwhile, local corporator Rais Shaikh met the municipal commissioner and demanded action against illegal nursing homes, hospitals and fake doctors in Govandi and Mankhurd.
