The legal metrology department conducted raids on 177 agricultural produce marketing committees (APMCs) to check for malpractices and booked 284 cases. Out of this, 241 cases were booked for not regularly stamping weights and measures and the remaining 43 were booked for violation.

The department conducted raids after receiving regular complaints about wrong weights and manipulation in weighing instruments at various APMC markets across the state.

LMO controller Amitabh Gupta said, “We have conducted the drive at APMC markets across the state where farmers and wholesalers of fruits and vegetables arrive to sell their produce. While checking weighing machines, we found out that there were violations.”

“Normally, APMCs have platform machines and other small weighing instruments,” he added.

“But in some places, APMCs have weighbridges. Farmers’ produce is weighed on weighbridge and other weighing and measuring instruments,” he further said.

While 241 cases were booked for not regularly stamping weights and measures, 43 remaining cases were booked for other violations including not keeping 1/10th load of the maximum capacity of the weighing instrument, not displaying verification certificate, using non-standard weights and so on.
