A 15-year-old boy lost his right leg after a 22-year-old man rammed his car into four class 9 students, who were taking a walk, at Goregaon (west) around 4.30 am on Tuesday. The victims — Dipesh Singh, Harkesh Prajapati, Hritik Pal and Suraj Yadav — were admitted to Siddharth Hospital but were later shifted to Nanavati Hospital.

The police is investigating if the driver, Karan Deshmukh, was drunk at the time of the accident. “We have sent Deshmukh’s urine samples to the laboratory concerned to determine if he was under the influence of alcohol,” said an officer from Bangur Nagar police station.

The incident took place on Link Road near HyperCITY. The students, who had noticed the car, which was headed towards Malad from Goregaon, stood on the divider waiting for it to pass, as they wanted cross to the opposite side of the road.

The car swerved to avoid colliding into an auto rickshaw and Deshmukh lost control of the vehicle, which rammed into the students.

According to sources, Yadav and Prajapati suffered leg fractures, while Singh’s right leg was so badly wounded that doctors decided to amputate it. After the incident, locals nabbed Deshmukh and informed the police.

The police arrested Deshmukh under various sections of the Indian Penal Code for rash driving and causing hurt by an act endangering the life or the personal safety of others.
