MUMBAI: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has dismissed 28 conservancy workers since their names were misspelt in documents submitted to the Supreme Court that sought permanent status for their jobs.

The BMC made 191 workers permanent nine months ago after the Court’s order. However, now it has found discrepancies in the 28 names’ spellings in documents submitted to the SC and therefore removed the workers from the service.

The workers have accused the BMC of not following due process while terminating their services.

“28  have been dismissed  without following a due process. The reason was that their names did not match with the list submitted to the SC. We doubt the intention of the BMC officials who have dismissed workers to dodge the SC’s order. The workers are protesting today and will not budge until the final decision is taken,” said Milind Ranade, GS of the Kachra Vatuk Shramik Sangh.

Reacting on the issue, additional municipal commissioner Vijay Singhal said, “If our officials are at fault, we will take action against them. But the names should be matched with the list submitted to the Supreme Court. After the verification process, we are making the remaining conservancy workers permanent,” Mr Singhal said.
