Mumbai: Mira Road police has nabbed two men for stealing Rs 2.79 lakh cash from ATMs using a unique modus operandi. The duo would withdraw cash from ATMs, then switch off its power connection within four seconds of the withdrawal to ensure the withdrawal does not get registered and no receipt is produced. The accused had used a key to switch off the power connections of particular ATMs and targeted ATMs that had no guards, according to the police.

With the arrest of the two crooks, the Naya Nagar police claims to have busted a unique interstate — ATM Power Interruption Fraud in Mira Road. Both accused, identified as Himanshu Sharma (19) and Anil Kumar Kushwaha alias Prince (19), are natives of Uttar Pradesh. However, the gang’s kingpin is on the run. Explaining the modus operandi, senior police inspector, Vaibhav Shingare said, “One of the accused would insert the debit/credit card and no sooner would the cash come out, than his accomplice would swiftly snap power supply to the ATM just before balance receipts slipped out. The deduction would not reflect in bank records as power had been cut off before transactions could be updated. They would complete the act within four seconds because even a moment more would have led to recording of the transaction.” The arrest followed after the company, which is entrusted with the job of loading cash in various ATMs in the city, noticed the anomalies and registered a complaint.
