Mumbai: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s (BMC) plans to spend Rs 1.83 crore for constructing a central divider at Linking Road have been slammed by corporators, who questioned the move by terming it a ‘waste of money.’ However, despite criticism, the ruling Shiv Sena cleared the proposal in the civic standing committee meeting on Friday.

The proposal of the replacement of dividers at the Linking Road in H-West ward, a famous shopping hub in western suburbs, was tabled before the standing committee for approval. According to the proposal, the old road dividers will be replaced by one-metre high central median-type barriers, which helps in preventing pedestrians crossing the road at unsafe places. The BMC has allotted the work to Computers Engineers at the cost of Rs 1.83 crore.

However, corporators raised questions over the high cost of the work. Opposition party leader Ravi Raja from Congress demanded to know what kind of central median divider is being placed that would cost BMC almost Rs 2 crore.

Corporators also opined that the BMC should ideally take up work of placing such dividers when road works are undertaken. Shiv Sena corporator Rajul Patel said, “If such types of barriers are laid when the road work is in progress, there will not be any disturbance in traffic. However in most cases it is observed that it is not done.”

Bandra corporator Asif Zakaria from Congress alleged that the BMC has already started the work of laying the divider. “The civic administration has tabled the proposal for the approval of the standing committee, but the work on the site has already started. In addition to this, at some places the central median along Linking Road already exists. The BMC should have laid such type of barriers on roads where they are not there. Instead, the BMC is removing it all and placing new central medians. It is a sheer waste of money,” he said.
