Mumbai: The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has announced the closure of the Bandra skywalk at the Kalanagar end from Nandadeep garden to the Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA) office.

The 100-metre patch will be dismantled for ongoing work on the connecting road between the Bandra-Worli Sea Link and Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC). The skywalk will be closed from March 25 to June 24.

The MMRDA has undertaken the work of construction of a flyover at the Kalanagar junction, which is in Bandra east. A part of the Kalanagar skywalk is affecting the alignment of the flyover. For the construction work, MMRDA has decided to remove the 100-metre patch from Nandadeep garden to the SRA building. This under-construction Bandra connector will reduce the burden on existing roads and make travelling to the business hub easier.

“From the public safety point of view, MMRDA has decided to close a part of the skywalk. It will be closed from March 25 to June 24,” said an official from MMRDA. According to the notice issued by MMRDA, the patch from the Kalanagar skywalk will be reconstructed, and will be opened to the public for use.

Last week, the Bombay high court allowed the MMRDA to remove 14 mangrove trees along the western express highway in Bandra. Thereafter, the MMRDA geared up for the construction of two separate arms that will connect the Bandra-Worli Sea Link.

The MMRDA had approached the high court seeking permission in February to remove the mangroves.

The Bandra skywalk was the first skywalk built by the MMRDA. It was completed in the year 2008. The skywalk is 1.3-km long from the Bandra station to Kalanagar.
