Mumbai: The Mira Road police has arrested a 35-year-old man who cheated unsuspecting jewellers by pledging fake gold ornaments. According to the police, the accused Ghanshyam Soni (35) had walked into Sudarshan Jewellers, a gold ornaments shop in the Hatkesh area of Kashimira, last week. Citing financial problems, Mr Soni convinced the shop owner Bhundaram Parmar to pledge a gold bangle and borrowed Rs 22,000, on the virtue of a certificate issued by the valuer of the company as original gold.

A few days later, the accused approached the shop again with similar bangles, seeking another loan. Mr Parmar checked the ornament and found them to be fake. Mr Parmar accepted the bangles and handed over part payment to the accused. He then alerted the police, following which a team led by API Prakash Pawar laid a trap and apprehended Mr Soni.  “Investigations revealed that Mr Soni had recently duped a Mumbai-based jeweller in a similar fashion,” confirmed senior police inspector Vasant Labdhe.
