Mumbai: In yet another incident of attack on medical staff, a patient’s kin has assaulted a 26-year-old male nurse in the wee hours of Saturday with a dressing scissor at the Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar — Byculla Railway Hospital. This has happened despite the government’s assurance to the Bombay high court on doctors’ safety in April this year.

The kin, Dattatray Lote (34) was asking for an extra bed sheet, which the nurse, Ramesh Pawar denied him. Lote then went outside, grabbed the weapon and allegedly attacked Pawar on his head, hand and stomach. The hospital staff informed the Byculla police and Lote was taken into custody and was presented in a local court.

The hospital staff said that Lote was under the influence of alcohol. Pawar is now stable and out of danger but will require minor operations.

Criticising the attack, Dr George Thomas, medical director of the hospital said that “the incident itself is dreadful, a spat on bed sheet led to this unfair situation.”

When asked if there were any CCTVs installed on the floor, Dr Thomas said, “After this incident, it is a must and things are in the pipeline. Soon it will be installed.”  Officials said that Lote, a relative of a railway employee, is a resident of Ambernath.
