Mumbai: Tensions simmered in Halaav bridge area in Kurla after a dumper driver knocked down a 12-year-old girl to death on Sunday night.

The police said that the incident took place at around 10.15pm, when the driver hit Aditi Kherwar was crossing the road in Buddha Colony. The accused driver, identified as Mustakim Kausar (29), was apprehended by the locals soon after and handed him over to the police.

The locals, meanwhile, blocked traffic and staged a protest at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) road junction.

“The locals protested and blocked the busy junction stating that the spot had witnessed string of accidents killing several pedestrians,” said an officer of the Kurla police station.

The protesting locals claimed that at least six persons were knocked to death by speeding vehicles at the spot where the Santacruz Chembur Link Road (SCLR) starts. Police had to intervene and clear the roads and maintain law and order in the neighbourhood.

Kausar was sent to a hospital for medical test, results of which are awaited. The police meanwhile stated that the accused was driving rashly at a high speed.

A case has been filed under section of Indian Penal Code for rash driving and death due to negligence. The investigators said that the Regional Transport Office will also check the dumper for any faults.

On October 10, a teacher and her three-year-old daughter were killed on Ghodbunder road in Thane after a trailer hit them from the rear. The police said that the incident took place at Bhayandar Pada area where locals caught hold of the fleeing driver and handed him to the police.

The victims were identified as Chandravati Vishwakarma (31) and her daughter Pranjali (3) who sustained severe injuries in the accident and succumbed to their injuries soon after.
