Mumbai: A Thane sessions court on Thursday awarded death to two men after finding them guilty of gang-raping two women and then killing one of them in 2012. The sentence was awarded by Additional sessions judge S.C. Khalipe.

The Judge, in his order, termed the crime as “brutal” and “heinous” and has sentenced them to life imprisonment for the gang-rape, while awarding them death for the murder.

Two days ago, a Pune court had awarded death sentence to a convict in a Pune rape-murder case.

The Thane court asked the two rapists, Rahmudding Sheikh alias Baba and Sandeep Shirsat alias Raghu Rokda to pay Rs 15,000 to the deceased victim's family and the survivor. The victims were rag pickers.

The accused lured them with the promise of offering them a job but then gang-raped them. The accused had attacked the victims with a saw blade and knife on their private parts.

At the time of the incident Sheikh was aged 24 and Shirsat aged 20. The incident happened on May 9, 2012 when the two victims were lured by the accused outside Vashi railway station. The victims aged 20 and 28 were ragpickers and begging for money outside the station.

Sheikh and Sandeep had asked the two women if they needed a job. “The women were from extremely impoverished backgrounds and needed money. The convicts then took them to Juinagar and boarded a rickshaw to CBD. There, they made them get off and forcibly took them to a tunnel in the area,” said Sangita Fad, district government pleader.

She added that the convicts were carrying knives and a saw blade, which they used to attack the women. While one of the women died on the spot, the other managed to escape,” she said. A police source revealed that the woman who escaped reached the highway and collapsed. “The convicts thought she was dead and fled the scene. The woman was rescued by a rickshaw driver and taken to a hospital where she after regaining consciousness narrated her ordeal,” said the source. Ms Fad said that statement of 11 witnesses’ was recorded.
