Mumbai: The Maharashtra Real Estate Regulatory Authority (MahaRERA) wrote to the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) and Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC), seeking explanation over the administrative delays in approving realty projects. During recent hearings, developers have mentioned that the delay from the administration is causing the projects to take longer time to complete, causing the regulatory authority to take this step.

The authority feels that civic officials as well as other government officials should not sit on files of realty projects, and ensure that the permissions are sorted on time. “Most of the time, the realtors state the administrative lag as a reason for delayed possession. So now, we have started to call the responsible official to the hearing. This will curb administrative delays and projects will be completed on time,” said Vijay Satbir Singh, a Maharera member. “This is a very good step but there is no authority or provision to penalise the responsible official for causing the delay. It’s a welcoming step for the realtors, but accountability will come only if a provision is made in the Act against such officials,” said Anand Gupta, member, Builders Association of India (BAI).
