Mumbai: With the Supreme Court imposing a ban on the sale of firecrackers in Delhi, many Mumbai-based traders dealing with firecrackers for livelihood are worried about such a ban to be introduced in the city as it will have dire impact on their business.

Talking to The Asian Age, Shailesh Shah, proprietor of the Chembur-based Amar Fireworks said, “There is not such ban on the sale of firecrackers in Mumbai as Mumbaikars are full of life and enthusiasm and this spirit will not ebb.”

When asked about the fireworks on Mumbai police's list of banned varieties for causing noise pollution, Mr Shah said, “The Chinese crackers are the ones that are on the list of banned ones and we do not sell such firecrackers that break the rules.”

Saqib Khan, who sells firecrackers as a Masjid Bunder-based Standard Fireworks, said, “The Diwali season has started where the crackers are sold on a large scale and such a ban will affect our bread and butter.”

The apex court has put a ban on selling fireworks but not on bursting. An employee of Masjid Bunder-based Kuber Fireworks said, “The ban is for selling crackers and not lighting. The cops are keeping a watchful eye on crackers like sparklers, cork amorces, bigger crackers that exceed 21 grams in weight, ukhali daru and cracker garlands that exceed 20 ft in length. But, we are already doing our business in a permissible manner.”
