Mumbai: The Bombay high court on Friday told the state government that it would extend the deadline for providing ‘Brake Test Tracks’ (BTT) at Vasai, Beed and Gadchiroli only if an undertaking is submitted before the court that the government will arrange alternate land for constructing the brake test tracks, which is
necessary for issuing fitness certificates to vehicles.

The government on Friday sought an extension for two months to provide BTT at three places. Government pleader Abhinandan Vagyani informed the division bench of justice Abhay Oka and justice A. K. Menon that the reason for seeking extension is that the there are civil suits pending in court about the lands which were selected for
constructing BTT.

He told the judges that it would not be possible to construct BTT within the time limit provided by the High court.

Initially the bench told him that the deadline for providing brake test tracks in all RTOs is March 31, 2018 and it would be too early to seek an extension.

However, Vagyani informed the bench that pending suits it would not be possible to complete the work of selection of alternate land and construction of new tracks within this time limit and sought an extension of two months.

Following this the bench said it would not extend the deadline beyong May 15, and that too on the condition that the government will submit an undertaking that it will make efforts to find alternate land and construct BTT because no such assurance is made in the application.
