Mumbai: Two women and a five-year-old girl were injured when a septic tank exploded in a Malvani public toilet at 10 am on Friday. A few children in the area had placed a firecracker near the opening of a pipe that connected to the septic tank, causing it to release toxic gases that ignited immediately.

The incident took place near Bhabhekar Nagar in Malvani, Malad.

According to sources, fire brigade officers rushed the injured — Sunita Gautam (40), Kanti Devi (65) and Nancy Gupta (5) — to the civic-run Shatabdi Hospital.

Fire brigade later carried out a thorough examination of the blast site. The culprits are yet to be tracked, but the police is probing the case. When contacted, senior police inspector Deepak Phatangare of the Malvani police station had initially dismissed any such incident, but later sent teams to the spot.

Fire brigade officials said they were investigating the matter and that it was too soon to comment on the incident.
