Mumbai: The state government will direct all district civil protection rights’ (CPRs) centres to register any citizen’s complaint regarding virginity tests at police stations.

State minister of state for home Ranjeet Patil and said that the government has asked all district police to register complaints. An officer of the home department said that the police of all districts and CPR centres would be informed to take cases under the Sexual Harassment Act 2013 and Maharashtra Protection of People from Social Boycott (Preven-tion, Prohibition and Redressal) Act, 2016.

An officer of the home department said that the police of all districts and CPR centres will be informed about verifying whether the case fell under the Sexual Hara-ssment Act 2013 and Maharashtra Protection of People from Social Boycott (Prevention, Prohib-ition and Redressal) Act, 2016. Once that was done, a FIR will be lodged. “The government is considering whether both Acts will be invoked or not,” he said.

Legislative Council member and Shiv Sena leader Neelam Gorhe led a delegation of some social organisations and met the state home minister over this issue at Mantralaya Wednesday. Certain communities in Maharashtra follow a demeaning custom where a newly-wed woman has to prove that she was a virgin prior to the marriage. In 2018, Ms Gorhe raised the issue of the virginity test of brides of the Kanjarbhat community in the Assembly.

According to officials, it had been revealed in the meeting that cases of caste Panchayat (caste-specific jury) had increased.

The interference of the caste panchayat had also increased. Ms Gorhe said that as cases had not been filed against the caste Panchayat, the government should take stern action against them.
