Police set up special CCTV and mobile units for bike riders

Mumbai: With bikers turning several stretches in BKC, South Mumbai and Central Mumbai as race tracks, especially on weekend nights and on holidays, the police have their hands full in regulating them.

In a bid to keep a watch on them, the Bandra police have set up CCTV units and mobile units to catch them. The bikers use special-make bikes and modifications, including the removal of silencers, to enhance their thrill.

The traffic police had installed high-speed cameras worth Rs 25 lakh in mid-February on the stretch from Reclamation to Sea Link and BKC to monitor and curb the unauthorised racing and bike stunts that take place in these areas. Residents often complained to the police. The sources claim that rash driving is a bailable offence and hence the accused get away easily.

“The most we can do is seize their bikes for 30 days or till the court’s further notice,” said a police source.

“Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic), Amitesh Kumar told The Asian Age, “We have installed speed cameras to nab the accused drivers speeding on a bike and trying our best to curb the menace of bike races and bike stunts.

We have also started drives and posted nakabandis and barricades to catch the bikers”.
