Mumbai: Citizens and activists have been urging the Ulhasnagar Municipal Corporation (UMC) to shut down the illegal jeans washing units in the vicinity of Waldhuni River since a long time. The washing unit has been allegedly releasing hazardous chemical into the Waldhuni river in Ulhasnagar.

In a move towards curbing the pollution in the water body, the MPCB had directed the UMC for stopping the water supply to the units. Residents from the area have claimed that the units are still working.

In October 13, the MPCB has written to the UMC stating, “The Ulhasnagar Municipal Corporation has provided water supply to jeans washing units located in Ulhasnagar Municipal Corporation area, which are operating without consent from MPC Board.”

According to a UMC official, the civic body is expediting the process to stop the water supply to all 225 units.
