Mumbai: The Central Railway (CR) gave Godrej a cheque of Rs 5.19 crore for the work on the Currey Road bridge, which is being built by the Army. Godrej owned 248 square feet of land and it has now relinquished its rights over the plot. Both parties came to an agreement after the direct intervention of Union railway minister Piyush Goyal.

An official said, “The land of the bridge was Godrej’s property and that is why there was a slight delay, but it has been resolved and work will begin a week from now.” He added, “Blocks for the works will be operated so as to cause minimum inconvenience to the
commuter.”

The Railways has worked out a plan for allocating blocks to the Army during the construction of the Foot Overbridge and they will range from two to 24 hours, according to the requirement.

The Pune-based wing of the Indian Army Corps of Engineers (IACOE) will coordinate with the Railways to build the FOB. The IACOE helps in constructing bridges during emergencies, including natural calamities. The preliminary work began from November 5 while the final deadline is Janaury 31. The army will be constructing FOBs at Elphinstone Road station, Currey Road and Ambivali railway stations.

The bridges that will be constructed are called bailey bridges. They are portable, and were first developed during World War II. They are built during emergencies and natural calamities.
