West Bengal: Government’s new tech to mark off land

Kolkata: The Mamata Banerjee government is introducing a new technology to bring in more accuracy in the demarcation of different plots of land. The land and
land reforms department is bringing in Differential Global Positioning System (DGPS), which will help in knowing the real position in a plot of land in a more scientific and hence accurate manner. The state government has initiated a pilot project in DGPS at Haringhata in Nadia district.

“Once this pilot project takes off, the method will be introduced in the entire state,” a senior official of the land and land reforms department said, adding that DGPS would be handy in locating and measuring a plot of land only by satellite, even in case of unfavourable geographical or environmental conditions.

Elaborating on the advantages of this technology, the official said that this would save time as well as cost while making a land map and assessing its price. The department had to take five things into consideration for computerising a plot of land. Firstly, it carries an assessment, then it makes a map, after that it finalises the map, follows it up with assessment of price and ultimately makes a documentation.

Efforts for computerisation of land records started back in 1986-87 in Bengal, with the participation of the National Informatics Centre, West Bengal State Unit.
