Kolkata: West Bengal Congress president Somen Mitra Thursday said that the decision to send CBI director Alok Verma on leave and subsequent transfer of several officials will lead to loss of faith of common people on the premier investigating agency.

“When common people of West Bengal are in tears for having been looted in the Saradha, Narada scams, such steps will be interpreted as an attempt to suppress all such scams having taken place all over the country,” Mr Mitra told reporters.

He said such a move would erode the faith of common man in CBI and go against the claim of “Swachchh Bharat” pronounced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Asked if ongoing crisis in the CBI would help ruling Trinamul Congress in West Bengal, Mitra said, “It will indirectly help the TMC. Infact anyone having aided and abetted corruption and graft.”

“Those covered in graft and corruption, are now living in great happiness in the wake of developments in CBI,” he said.

Echoing the views of the Congress President Rahul Gandhi, Mr Mitra said the move to “shunt” CBI director Alok Verma was aimed at “covering up” the Rafale scam.

Mr Mitra said the developments surrounding CBI in past few days “were one of the most shameful phases in Indian history.”

He said, “In the name of building a Swachchh Bharat, the PM has created scores of aswachchh (unclean) personalities in past five years. The decision was a political conspiracy to kill the aspirations of people of India by destroying the independent role of CBI.”
