Kolkata: Waking up to a series of complaints by the Opposition parties against controversial Trinamul Congress strongman of Birbhum, Anubrata Mondal, the Election Commission of India has directed district magistrate of Birbhum to conduct a probe against him.

However, the development came on a day Mr Mondal warned the Central paramilitary forces not to act on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s orders during the Lok Sabha Elections.

In his own style he reminded them of their duty and also threatened to confront them if they are found on the wrong foot.

According to sources, most of the Opposition parties, including the BJP and CPI(M), had lodged complaints against the Trinamul Birbhum district president on March 16 when deputy election commissioner Sudeep Jain was in the city to review the poll-preparedness. They demanded action against him also, sources revealed.

On Monday, the ECI ordered the district magistrate as well as the district electoral officer of Birbhum to conduct an inquiry and submit a report to it, sources added. During the day, Mr Mondal however said during a rally, “The Central forces will come. You are doing injustice. You have come to cover the elections. So you will treat all the people equally.”

He added, “You will not act as a stooge of Modibabu. We know that the Central forces can indulge in anomalies. But you should not feel panicked. There is no room for it. We will fight...legally. We will make them feel that there will be no place for them if injustice is done. No one will be spared. We will take our votes.”

This was however not the first time when Mr Mondal came under the EC radar.

Ahead of the last Assembly election in 2016 in the state, the poll panel ordered two FIRs against him for violating the Model Code of Conduct on two occasions.

He was then put under surveillance also.
